The David Letterman Learning Experience (2022-23)

How might we demonstrate to the Ball State community and beyond that we are all connected?

The 2022-23 David Letterman Learning Experience focuses on the connections that form throughout the Ball State community. This year’s team explores the potential of interactive, unique storytelling methods through three different deliverables: a large touchscreen experience, an augmented reality app, and a social media campaign. The touchscreen wall experience hopes to highlight the stories and connections that have formed among the Ball State community. The augmented reality app presents the way campus has developed and changed over the years while sharing the stories that various generations of cardinals can enjoy. The social media campaign aims to engage audiences and tie all three pieces of the project together. Through each piece of the project, the team hopes to highlight and facilitate connections among the entire Ball State community.

David Letterman, a 1969 graduate of the Ball State Department of Radio and Television, donated more than 1,000 artifacts from his life and late-night television career to the university in 2015. While Letterman may make light of his alma mater by calling it the “Harvard of Muncie,” his commitment to the university is unwavering. David Letterman, a proud alumnus, has partnered with the Emerging Media Design and Development program to provide a learning experience that leverages this collection of shared materials, inspiring students to think creatively, act courageously, and solve complex real-world challenges. This interdisciplinary project-based experience puts students at the center of technology, transmedia storytelling, and art. It’s a rewarding experience to work cooperatively with one of Ball State’s most famous alums.
